Sarah Martin -Operations Research and marketing Manager

Sarah Martin has used her skills in economic development and vision of social enterprise to create ground-breaking Indigenous projects.

Sarah founded the monthly Blak Market at La Perouse in March 2014, with Peter Cooley. This brilliant venture works on many levels. It uses the history of La Perouse – it takes place on Bare Island, in a 19th century fort adjoining the Loop where until the 1960s Aboriginal families sold their art and handicrafts.

It brings people to the beautiful La Perouse area to see Aboriginal culture at its most proud and is a wonderful place for sharing and reconciliation.

It gives Indigenous stallholders a chance to shine, and the community to get together and display their skills. It is probably the largest incubator or Aboriginal business in Australia.

Sarah set up the first La Perouse Aboriginal community newsletter when she was sick and tired of reading all the negative stories about Aboriginal people in the media. The newsletter gave the community stories of young people’s success, and trained locals in journalism, editing, layout, photography and production.

Sarah spent the next 15 years with her partner, running cultural reconnection programs for Aboriginal communities as well as group lessons in surfing, sailing, and fishing. Peter and Aboriginal staff still run these programs, which give urban Aboriginal families and children in out-of-home care the chance to reconnect with their culture, learn new skills, and spend time in the bush.
